Is Sedation Dentistry Right for You?
Dental anxiety is a common problem for both children and adults. Sedation dentistry can be the ideal solution for patients whose anxiety prevents them from receiving the dental services they need. Athens Smiles Family Dental is pleased to offer sedation dentistry for patients of all ages.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
The American Dental Association (ADA) defines sedation dentistry as the use of some type of sedating medication to help you or your child feel more relaxed for the duration of their procedure. Sedatives temporarily depress the central nervous system and decrease conscious awareness. However, you remain aware enough to respond to verbal commands throughout the procedure unless you choose IV sedation.
Options for Sedation Dentistry in Athens, Texas
We use two primary forms of sedation dentistry here at Athens Smiles. We will recommend a specific type for you or your child based on the level of dental anxiety present.
Nitrous Oxide
Alternatively known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a type of sedative that you inhale through a plastic mask placed over your nose and mouth. You become deeply relaxed in a matter of seconds as you breathe in the nitrous oxide. We typically provide patients who choose nitrous oxide with a local anesthetic at the same time.
Intravenous (IV) Sedation
This type of sedation is most appropriate for patients with a severe phobia of dental work. You receive medication through a thin tube that delivers it directly to your bloodstream. IV sedation puts you into the same deep sleep you would experience when having surgery at a hospital or outpatient center.
